Making recycled paper can be a fun and rewarding experience that not only helps reduce waste but also allows you to unleash your creativity. By using simple materials such as scrap paper, water, and a few household items, you can create unique and beautiful paper with your own hands. The process of making recycled paper involves tearing up the paper, blending it with water, and shaping it into sheets, providing a tactile and hands-on experience that can be enjoyed by all ages. You can easily adapt this recipe by using different colors of paper, textures, and additives like flower petals or glitter so each sheet of paper you make will be a one-of-a-kind creation.

Materials Needed

  • Newspaper and other scrap paper (non-glossy)
  • Large container (for soaking the newspaper)
  • Blender or food processor
  • Water
  • Large bowl or basin
  • Large spoon
  • Towels or rags
  • Wooden board or baking tray
  • Rolling pin (optional)

Let’s Get Creative

Start by Collecting and soaking the Newspaper. Tear the newspaper and other scrap paper into small pieces and soak them in a large container filled with water. Let the newspaper soak for at least a few hours, or overnight.

After the newspaper has soaked, pour it into a blender or food processor and blend until it turns into a pulp. You can add more water if the mixture is too thick.

Pour the pulp into a large bowl or basin and drain off any excess water. An easy way to do this is to pour it into a fine sieve to drain off the bulk of the water and then tip it into a bowl. Use a large spoon to mix the pulp, breaking up any clumps and ensuring that it is evenly mixed.

Take a towel or rag and place it on a flat surface, such as a wooden board or a baking tray. Spoon the pulp onto the towel or rag, spreading it out to the desired thickness and shape. Smooth out the surface of the pulp with a spoon or your hands. Next place another cloth or towel over the top of the pulp and press down firmly to remove any excess water. You could also try using a sponge if you find there is quite a bit of excess water.

Make sure your paper is flat. To do this you can use a rolling pin or even a cake tin to gently press down on top of the paper. Remove the top layer of the towel/ rag.

Allow the paper to air dry by leaving it out in a dry, well-ventilated area. You can speed up the drying process by using a fan or placing the paper in a sunny spot. Once the top layer of the paper is dry, carefully flip it over and let the other side dry.

Once the paper is dry you can shape the paper by folding or cutting it as desired.

Congratulations! You’ve just made your own recycled paper. While this method may not produce as smooth or uniform paper as traditional paper-making, it is a fun and eco-friendly way to recycle old newspapers and create something new and useful.

1. Scavenger Hunt

A scavenger hunt is a great way to get tweens moving and working together. Create a list of items for the teams to find, and set them off to explore the house or backyard. The first team to find all the items on the list wins.

You can make this simple by sticking to a list of items like on our Indoor and Garden Scavenger Hunt printables or make it more challenging by giving clues to find the items. Here are some sample clues to get you started,

  1. I’m used to help you clean, but I don’t get wet. Find me where I hang in the closet. (Answer: Broom)
  2. You wear me on your feet, but I don’t have laces. Find me near the door where you enter the house. (Answer: Slippers)
  3. One of me per day keeps the doctor away. (Apple)
  4. I have numbers on my face, but I’m not a clock. Find me in the kitchen where you mix ingredients. (Answer: Measuring cup)
  5. I’m round and colorful, and I bounce when you throw me. Find me in the room with the couch and TV. (Answer: Ball)
  6. I have many pages and words, but I’m not a novel. Find me on the shelf with other reference books. (Answer: Dictionary)

2. Minute to Win It Games

Minute to Win It games are fast-paced and fun. Set up a variety of challenges that can be completed in under a minute, such as stacking cups, the cookie-to-mouth game, or bouncing ping pong balls into a cup. The Pragmatic Parent has a great list of ideas on what games to include during your Minute to Win It tournament.

3. DIY Photo Booth Set

Set up a DIY photo booth with props like hats, glasses, and mustaches, and let the tweens take silly photos of themselves. This is a great activity for the beginning of the party when everyone is still arriving. We are loving this Insta-Themed Social Media Party Photo Booth Selfie Frame with Emoji & Speech Bubble Props for an easy set-up. Team it with 24 Pieces Party Photo Booth Props and the tweens will be entertained for hours.

To add an extra twist to the DIY photo booth set, incorporate a “Costume Challenge” game. Provide a box of themed costumes and accessories, and challenge the tweens to come up with the most creative and funny outfit combinations for their photo session. This interactive game will encourage their imagination and lead to hilarious memories captured on camera.

4. Charades

Charades is a classic party game that never gets old. Write down a list of movies, TV shows, and books for the tweens to act out, and let the guessing begin.

5. Balloon Pop Challenge

Blow up a bunch of balloons and place a small prize or piece of candy inside each one. Divide the tweens into teams and see which team can pop the most balloons in a set amount of time.

6. Pin the Tail on the Donkey

Pin the Tail on the Donkey is an old-school game that is still a favorite. Blindfold the tweens, spin them around a few times, and let them try to pin the tail on the donkey. You can also get this game in a variety of different animals such as cat, unicorn, fox and even a cow!

7. Karaoke

Set up a karaoke machine and let the tweens sing their favorite songs. This is a great activity for a group of tweens who love to perform.

8. Freeze Dance

This classic game is always a hit with tweens. Play some music and have your tweens dance around. When the music stops, they have to freeze in place. The last person to freeze is out.

9. Donut on a String

Donut on a string is a fun game where a donut is hung from a string, and players try to eat the donut without using their hands. To play, first, hang up one donut for each player by tieing a string to the center of the donut and securing it to a sturdy overhead object. Line up the players next to their individual donuts. When you say “go,” the players must try to eat the donut without using their hands. They can use their mouths, teeth, and tongue to grasp and eat the donut. The first player to eat the entire donut wins the game. To make the game more challenging, you can blindfold the players or make them stand on one foot while they play. Also, make sure to choose a donut that is small enough to be eaten in a reasonable amount of time, but not so small that it falls off the string too easily.

10. The Chocolate Game

To play this game, you will need a large bar of chocolate, a knife, a fork, and a pair of dice. The objective of the game is to roll doubles on the dice and then use the knife and fork to cut a piece of chocolate and eat it before the next person rolls a six.

The catch is that the chocolate is only passed around the circle when someone rolls doubles. This means that the longer it takes for someone to roll doubles, the smaller the piece of chocolate becomes. The game continues until the entire bar of chocolate is finished, and everyone has had a chance to eat a piece. To add an extra challenge and to make the game last longer have the kids wear items such as a hat, gloves, and scarf which they put on before starting to cut and eat the chocolate!

Let’s Get Creative

Pom Pom Chicks in Egg Carton Nest

Make the Pom Pom

Start by making your pom pom. To do this print out the Pom Pom Maker printable and cut out the circle. You need to cut around both lines so it looks a bit like a donut. Place the template onto cardboard and trace around the outer and inner circle and then repeate so you have x2 donuts drawn on the cardboard. Cut these out. You should now have two donut rings that are exactly the same size.

Cut a long length of yarn. To make the pom pom quicker cut a few lenghts of yarn (all the same length) and hold the ends together. Place the two cardboard donut rings together and wrap the yarn around the donut ring. Continue wrapping until there is no more yarn. Carefully cut more yarn and continue to wrap it around the donut ring. Continue this process until you have a few layers of yarn and the inner circle has gotten smaller.

Now for the tricky part, it could be a good idea to get an adult to help with this stage. You will need a short length of yarn (roughly 20cm) which will be used to tie the pom pom together. Cut the yarn between the two pieces of cardboard. This is best done slowly and with sharp scissors. Take your time to make sure you are cutting between the cardboard pieces. You only want to cut the outer edge of the yarn! Once you have cut around the entire circle take the short length of yarn and put it between the two cardboard donut rings. Tie a knot and pull it tightly together, tie another knot to make it secure. Carefully remove the cardboard donut rings. If needed give your pom pom a haircut so it is a nice fluffy ball shape.

Make The Chick and Basket

All your pom pom needs now is to be transformed into a cute chick! To do this cut out a beak from the orange paper. The easiest way to do this is to fold a small piece of orange paper in half and to cut out a triange shape with the edge being along the fold. Use a little glue and stick the paper beak in place. Next add the googly eyes by gluing them in place above the beak.

Cut one of the segments from an egg carton, this will be the nest. Have fun decorating the nest with paint and stickers. Once dry place the pom pom chick into the egg carton nest.

In our home, this easy coconut loaf never lasts for long! It is fantastic with a cup of tea or coffee and is the perfect addition to school lunchboxes. This is one of my go-to recipes when I feel like doing some baking but have loads of other things going on so don’t have much time free to be in the kitchen.

Making this recipe is very simple. Combine the coconut, flour, sugar, and baking powder before mixing in the milk. Start off using 1 cup of milk but add a little extra if the mixture is looking too thick. You want it to be able to fall off the spoon as a batter-like consistency but not be too thin. Bake in the oven for approximately 1 hour and then sit down to relax with a slice of coconut loaf.

What is desiccated coconut?

Desiccated coconut is coconut flesh that has been flaked or shredded and dried. It has a finer texture compared to shredded coconut. Desiccated and shredded coconut is from the same part of the coconut so if you find that you have shredded coconut in your panty a good option would be to put it in the blender/ food processor to make it finer to give the loaf the desired texture. This mini food processor is the perfect size for small jobs like this.

Five Ways To Enhance Your Garden

0

With summer rapidly approaching, it’ll soon be time to dust off the gardening clothes and prepare your garden for another summer. Gardens can act as an extra room for your home and can greatly enhance your mental health. People enjoy their gardens in different ways, from outdoor entertainment to a play area for the kids, but there’s no doubt that a perfectly enhanced garden can improve your mood and wellbeing. Here are five ways to make your outdoor area perfect for you and your family.

Five Ways To Enhance Your Garden

1. Grow Your Own Fruit and Veg

With a high cost of living and the threat of food shortages, many people are turning to their gardens to grow their own fruit and veg. Having a patch in your garden where you can see the progress of your produce can enhance your own mood and sense of self-satisfaction and achievement. It also gives you something to show off and be proud of when visitors arrive. Visit onestopgardenshop.net for more information on growing your own fruit and veg.

2. Add Some Solar Lights

Solar lights add an ambiance to your outdoor area and give it a more relaxed and inviting feel. Coming on at dusk, they are charged by the sun throughout the day, then activate once the light begins to fade. Solar lights come in a variety of formats, such as stakes that go into the ground, to string lights that can hang loosely across fences. For an enhanced feel, you can choose color-changing lights or warm white to give your garden an enticing and intimate appeal.

3. Garden Furniture

After a long, cold, and dark winter, we’re all craving a bit of sunlight, and with the light evenings, we’re able to benefit from spending more time outdoors. And for that, you’ll need some garden furniture, which you can find plenty of information on at furnitureliscious.com. Consider buying a treated table and chair set for a bit of al fresco dining with the family to enjoy on the warmer evenings. Or, if you need a bit of extra storage space, you could purchase a storage bench, which allows you to keep tools out of sight or provide a dry place for garden cushions or toys.

4. Install a Water Feature

There’s something about the babble of water that instantly makes people feel relaxed. Whether it’s a small brook or a river, the sound of water contains some natural relaxing properties. Installing a water feature brings those properties to your garden so you can enjoy them at your leisure. Coming in all shapes and sizes, a water feature may be just the thing to help enhance your mental health and inspire feelings of calm and serenity within your garden paradise.

5. Generate Some Heat

If you’re planning to spend all evening and well most of the night outside, you may need a little heat as the night wears on. Chimineas make a stunning addition to any garden, as well as being practical for keeping you warm. Another way you can generate heat in your garden is a firepit. Smokeless fuel can be used within the pit to limit the effects on the environment whilst not intruding on your neighbor’s clean air.

How To Improve and Maintain Healthy Eyesight

healthy eyesight

When you’re thinking about your overall health, it might be easy to overlook your eyes. Luckily, there are several things you can do on a daily basis to help boost your eye health. Around two million people in the UK are living with sight loss, yet taking active steps towards protecting your eyes could prevent damage to your vision.

How To Improve and Maintain Healthy Eyesight

Eat a healthy diet

It’s no secret that good eyesight can be closely linked to maintaining a healthy diet. Eating nutritious, whole foods and making sure that you’re able to access vitamins and minerals will be crucial to the longevity of your healthiest eyesight.

Try to include a wide range of fruit and vegetables in your diet, such as berries, apples, carrots, and more. Additionally, eating at least one portion of oily fish per week will help you to incorporate omega-3 fatty acids into your diet, which have been proven to reduce the risk of eye diseases like macular degeneration.

Get your eyes tested

It’s not always easy to know whether your eyes are as healthy as possible – especially if you’ve not noticed any deterioration in your vision. At least once every two years, it’s recommended that you should visit an optician to get your eyes tested professionally tested.

After an eye test, your optician will be able to advise you on your eye health along with providing an updated prescription, which indicates the quality of your vision. If your eyesight is getting worse, your optician could tell you that you’ll need to wear glasses. Alternatively, contact lenses could provide a subtle and effective correction to allow you to see clearly again.

Protect your eyes from the sun

If you’re heading outside during the summer months, always make sure you wear sunglasses. As a result of direct and intense UV exposure, the sun can be directly attributed to causing eye problems including cataracts.

There are two types of harmful rays from the sun: UVA and UVB. Both can damage the eyes, so choosing a sufficient protection rating will help you to maintain your eye health.

Sunglasses are ranked in categories from 0 to 4, with Category 0 being translucent and Category 4 being the darkest lenses, intended for intense sunshine. Look out for sunglasses with UV400 protection, which can filter out almost all UVA and UVB rays.

Take breaks from the screen

Whether you work remotely, in an office, or spend a lot of time gaming, staring at a screen for extended periods can be harmful to your eyes. Taking regular breaks and enjoying activities away from your screens will help you to protect your eyes and reduce any discomfort from straining.

Know when to seek help

Lastly, if you’ve noticed a problem with your eyesight, it’s important to know that there’s no shame in seeking a professional opinion. The thought of sight loss can be intimidating, but with proper and prompt intervention, you could slow down any damage and prolong good vision too.

Tips for Keeping Your Skin Young and Healthy

When it comes to overall health, the importance of taking good care of your skin cannot be overstated. Not only does taking good care of your skin help keep it looking healthy and youthful, but it also protects your body from infection and disease. The human skin is your body’s largest organ, and it plays a key role in regulating body temperature, protecting your internal organs and tissues, and more. However, many people don’t know how to take good care of their skin or create a skincare routine that works for them. Fortunately, you don’t have to do it all on your own. If you’re in need of advice, keep reading for tips for keeping your skin young and healthy.

How can you keep your skin young and healthy?

img

There’s no doubt that seeing a dermatologist is the best way to keep your skin looking and feeling good. Dermatologists are medical doctors who specialize in skin, hair, and nails. They are uniquely qualified to diagnose and treat a wide variety of skin conditions. From acne and eczema to psoriasis and skin cancer, dermatologists can treat your skin condition and give you advice on how to maintain healthy skin. A quick search for “skin specialist near me” should give you some options for board-certified dermatologists in your area.

You should always stay hydrated and use properly formulated moisturizers to protect your skin. Water flushes out toxins from the body, while also keeping your skin looking plump and hydrated. Moisturizers can replenish lost moisture in the skin, restoring its natural elasticity and providing a protective barrier against environmental factors that could damage or age it prematurely. Moisturizers typically contain emollients such as hyaluronic acid or ceramides which attract water molecules into the outer layer of the skin for long-lasting hydration.

Remember, before adding any new products to your routine, it’s a good idea to check with your dermatologist first. They can explain how it may affect any health conditions you have or interact with the medications you’re currently taking. They will have the knowledge required to tell you about the risks and benefits of any product or procedure.

What lifestyle factors can affect the condition of your skin?

img

Now that you have a better idea of what you can do to take care of your skin, let’s discuss some of the lifestyle factors that can affect the condition of your skin. For example, lack of sleep can have a negative impact on skin health. Sleep is essential for the body to be able to repair and replenish itself. During sleep, the body produces hormones and proteins, such as human growth hormone, which help keep our skin looking healthy and vibrant. Research even suggests that lack of sleep specifically worsens skin integrity.

If your goal is to have healthy, hydrated, and glowing skin, you need to maintain a healthy diet. Generally, a diet that’s rich in essential vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants is required. Actually, maintaining a healthy diet can be beneficial for both your physical and mental health. It can also protect your skin from environmental damage. A balanced diet includes various fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins. You should also avoid or limit foods that are processed or high in sugars and unhealthy fats.

As you can see, taking good care of your skin is necessary for preserving its condition. Seeing a dermatologist, staying hydrated, and finding products that address your needs are integral steps in achieving and taking the best possible care of your skin. You need to make healthy lifestyle choices too, like getting enough sleep at night and sticking to a healthy diet. Healthy habits have to be a priority if you want to look and feel your best on a regular basis. If you follow the tips in this article, then you’ll be well on your way to having beautiful and healthy skin.
